Do you struggle with being a woman of moderation? It would be easy for me to answer that question with an astounding, “YES!” if I wasn’t still uncomfortable from overeating my own homemade chili! I have warm chocolate chip cookies on my stove and ice cold milk in the refrigerator…right now, I am contemplating eating at least two (cookies) and then chugging down some Maalox before I head upstairs to bed. Yes, I have my moments of weakness.
“Have you found honey? Eat only as much as you need, least you be filled with it and vomit.” – Proverbs 25:16
“Feed me with the food allotted to me; Lest I be full and deny You, and say, “Who is the Lord?” – Proverbs 30:8-9
Moderation: action of making something moderate: the limiting, controlling, or restricting of something so that it becomes or remains moderate.
Food isn’t the only thing that needs to be used in moderation. Moderation can apply to anything that has the potential to control us; television, shopping, romance novels, or a particular friend. If we are running to any of these things when we feel bored or stressed, God is calling us to moderation.
In what areas of your life is God calling you to practice moderation?
Three simple steps to practicing moderation:
Pray- moderation requires an act of God sometimes! If we try to be moderate with our own strength, we will fail.
Plan- moderation requires planning. Plan your time so that mindless devotion to one particular activity or person doesn’t happen. Follow a schedule if needed.
Passages- feed your soul hunger with the Word of God. When you are experiencing soul hunger you are more vulnerable to overindulge.
